Hm. The anime classic “Akira” is being remade for an American audience - to be released in 2011. I’m not a big anime fan, but this bodes ill. Will we even be alive in 2011? The jury is out on that one. Here’s a “preview”:

sweet jebuz i’m so glad i’m not the only one who feel this way about this “movie”.
To be honest I was pissed off that they even came out with an english dub version of the movie since they had done such a nice job with the lip synch… now they’re going to americanize it live action.
fail.
The trend to make remakes is out of hand. It really hit the nadir with “Wings of Desire”, remade with Nick Cage (also guilty of the atrocious Wicker Man remake).
You’d think that a film make in Germany in the mid 80s about angels in West Berlin, who live in a world without colour would be depressing. Not in the original - but in the Hollywood remake, yes - very depressing. The original makes you glad to be alive and human. The remake (set in LA) makes you want to slit your wrists.
Here’s the amazing library sequence from the Wim Winders version:

There’s more craft in that one scene than in the entire remake. Note that the angels (the guys in long coats with scarves) can only be seen by children.
Remakes are the last port of call for the creatively exhausted.
